WEST END

We moved from Wyatt Hall to West Main St. West End it was called at that time. I hated to leave Wyatt Hall. Perkins Cannon owned the place at that time, and he was getting married for the second time and he and his family wanted to live there. This was Henry, Jennie and Alice Cannon’s father. Again we lived close to the Clark family, second door, and as usual she was always ready to do something to help us. She was a mother to my mother. We loved our next door neighbors very much, Mr. and Mrs. Peek. Aunt Dona was living with Mrs. Jennie Cannon at this time, mother of Mr. Newt Cannon and Perkins, Mrs. Fleming and Sam Cannon. Aunt Dona was such a dear person and helped us out so much.

Dona Butner Gunter with Mary Emma Tucker Peek, her sister Gertrude's good neighbor. In recent years I have learned that Mrs. Peek was actually my fourth cousin on my father's side.

Grandma and Grandpa Butner lived in the house with Miss Susie Gentry. Grandpa was a very talented man with making things of wood. He always had such a beautiful garden. He was Christian man. He loved the beauty of the earth—gardens, trees, flowers, etc. Speaking of wooden things, he made and Uncle Simmie made beautiful chains of wood, etc. All of the cousins I had on the Butner side lived out in Nevada. I only saw them once. I didn’t see the Gentry cousins very much. They lived in the mountains of North Carolina. I had a few nice visits there when I was young.

There was a little trolley car that went from Franklin to Leipers Fork. We rode it to Grandpa’s house before they moved to Franklin. We met the Lockes through our grandparents, and they became good friends. Jamie was a song leader at Fourth Avenue Church for a long time.

Jessie Lee and Hardy were married while we lived in West End. They married at the Cannon house. Dorothy and I did a lot of babysitting in those days. Frances, Jimmy, and Bobby were babies. Bobby was born there. The house had recently been renovated. David, Frances, and Jimmy were born at Wyatt Hall.

While living in West End, I went to high school; up on the hill we always called it. I also went to Falls Business College in Nashville. Mr. Peek, our next door neighbor, was motorman on the trolley car I rode on to school. I would always get nauseated, and he fixed a seat out front where he was which helped me from getting car sick. Such a thoughtful kind man. Grandpa Butner died while we lived in West End. Dan was twelve years old at the time.

The house on West End today.
