Rutha Gentry, like William Gentry, was the daughter of George W. Gentry [abt. 1824 - 1864] and Ellender "Nellie"Brooks [abt. 1826 - after 1892]. George died in Claiborne County, Tennessee, while serving in the Union Army. In 1900 Rutha, the widow of Evan Roberts, was living with her daughter Mary, age 19, in Marshall, Madison County, North Carolina. Although I could not find her in later census records, she was obviously still living during my mother's childhood.
Her mother's Union widow's pension application lists her date of birth as January 28, 1852, which is more consistent with the ages shown for her in earlier censuses.Sources:
