Dona Lee Butner, sister of Gertrude Butner, was born on February 11, 1880, in Coffee County, Tennessee, and died on November 8, 1962, in Franklin, Tennessee. She married James Balaam Gunter [1851-1920] on June 1, 1904. The couple had no children. This is not our only family story concerning Aunt Donie and hats. As a girl of seventeen, she took the train to the Tennessee Centennial held in Nashville in 1897. Wanting a new hat for the occasion but unable to afford one, she blacked an old and faded straw hat with stove blacking. Unfortunately it was raining when she arrived in Nashville, and she attended the Centennial with blacking dripping from her hat. |
